Repair Attempts That Actually Land
The skill that separates couples who recover from couples who accumulate. Repair is not apology — it is re-connection mid-conflict.
Repair is a bid, not a verdict
A repair attempt is any move that interrupts escalation: a softened tone, a joke you both know, a hand on an arm, 'can we start over?' It does not settle the disagreement. It restores the sense that you are on the same team while you disagree.
Why they fail
Most repair attempts fail for one of three reasons: they arrive after flooding, when neither person can process them; they carry a rider ('I'm sorry, but you also...'); or they are made in a currency the other person does not read — humor to someone who needs acknowledgment first.
Make yours legible
Agree in a calm moment on two or three explicit repair phrases you will both honor, and on what an accepted repair looks like. A repair the other person cannot recognize is not a repair. Writing them down feels awkward; it works anyway.
