Hughes vs. Robbins: Two Maps of the Same Territory

Two lists, two purposes

Chase Hughes' 6 Core Social Needs describe what a person is protecting in a social exchange — the relational stakes of a single conversation. Tony Robbins' Six Human Needs describe what drives a person across their whole life, including the two growth needs that relationships often forget.

In practice, Hughes tells you what just happened in the argument. Robbins tells you why one of you keeps needing that thing in the first place.

Where they map onto each other

A rough translation between the two frameworks:

The gap that causes the most trouble

Robbins' Variety need has no clean Hughes counterpart, and it is the quiet cause of a huge number of long-term-relationship complaints. One partner reads novelty-seeking as instability; the other reads routine as suffocation. Framed as a needs difference rather than a character flaw, it becomes a scheduling problem instead of a betrayal.

Growth and Contribution matter too. Couples who only negotiate Certainty and Connection get stable and bored. Adding a shared project — anything you build together — feeds the two needs no argument ever raises.

Using both in one report

Run the conversation through Hughes first to name what got threatened in the exchange, then check the Robbins layer to see whether the same need is chronically underfed. A one-time Significance hit is a repair conversation. A chronic Significance deficit is a life-design conversation.
